Correcting Dry Eye
Dry Eye Syndrome
Over 9 million people suffer from severe dry eyes, and an estimated 30 million have mild to moderate dry eyes – a full 10% of the entire US population. It is one of the most common conditions we treat.
Dry eyes are really a tear film insufficiency. Many people with dry eyes actually produce sufficient tears, but the quality of the tear film is poor which leads to a rapid evaporation of moisture. That’s why many people with dry eyes actually complain of excessive tearing.
Common symptoms include burning, excessive tearing and/or a sensation of something in the eye, particularly when reading or doing computer work. This happens because we blink less when we read or concentrate and the condition often worsens toward the end of the day, and in cold or windy environments. Symptoms typically effect women more than men and are known to become more severe with age.
Previously, the only treatment option presented was a regime of lubricating drops, which if used enough may dilute the best tear ever made: the natural human tear. At Vision for Life, we treat the problem differently – an individualized approach to patient care. We take time to evaluate the cause of the dryness and determine the proper treatment plan for each patient. Research points toward nutrition as an important component of this very common problem. We will often treat with special supplements designed for Dry Eye Syndrome. When indicated we will treat with Restasis eye drops which help to increase tear production. In some cases, we will recommend punctal occlusion. This closure conserves both your own tears and artificial tears you may have added. Silicone plugs may remain in place indefinitely or may be removed after a period of time. Depending on your individual visual needs, Dr. Horn will recommend the appropriate combination of treatments to alleviate your dry eye suffering.
